...acting via cables on the rear drums. The system was exactly the same on every vintage SAAB I ever owned, from the 1963 GT-850 through the current 1974 Sonett.
The 1972 model 99 I owned briefly (until the timing chain let go) also had a hand-operated emergency/parking brake, although in this case it operated via a set of small auxiliary drums built into the FRONT brake rotors. The fact that the handbrake operates on the fronts is also why it's impossible to do handbrake turns in a 99!
