My understanding is that any twin cam engine (ie 16V) are by there own nature more revy developing their power slightly higher in the rev range than the single cam engines.
But having owned a 72 99 two door 99 I understand what you mean about the responsivenss. My 72 99 felt very quick and felt much more chuckable around corners than my 78 99T, a 77 EMS or my 89 900i that I own or have onwed for a while.
Most 99s I have driven have had very sweet 4spd boxes and I found this really increased the driving pleasure of these cars, especially when driven back to back with the balulky 5spd 900s.
After drinving a 78 99T (5 door) for a couple of years I can certainly believe JustinVan comments about it being the heaviest Saab... Mind you while it did have plenty of lag due to very low compression I do not think it was as bad as early turbo Porches or the like.
Cheers
