The B engines spin up quicker than the H motors and the 16Vs. They can be made to be pretty mean! But the stock B motors had what, 110 HP and the 16V NA motors had 130? I bet a lot of what you feel is the much heavier car. Sometimes the gearing in the 5spds can be too long for a non-turbo motor (depends on what gearbox you have) and it can seem like your car has no power. My '76 99 rally car has forged VW pistons (higher compression but I don't know what ratio), a '73 EMS cam, and a few other mods (K&N filter, drilled airbox, header, '85 CIS fuel injection). I also have a quick ratio 5spd and after doing some 0-60 times I found that I was getting times quicker than the stock 0-60 times on a 16VT SPG. Of course a NA car can sometimes take a turbo car "off the line" becuase of the lower compression and spool up time associated with the turbo engine.
