Here is the story as I know it regarding the vehicle. The previous owner stated that he heard a noise in the motor; he shut the car off; towed it to a mechanics shop, who determined that the oil pump was not working; the owner parked the car in a barn 10 years ago. Since then, I towed the car to the tow yard, replaced the battery, wires, plugs, cap, rotor (can't find a condensor). I removed the line from the gas tank and plugged it as the tank is full with old gas. Ran a line to my auxilliary tank and cranked it over, with a few shots of started fluid. I guess I should have put oil down the plug holes, but I didn't. The car cranked and started, with much noise and black smoke. I shut the car down and write the previous love letter to the saab universe. In the mean time I had been doing homework on the vehicle (my dad was a wash,dc, saab club record holder who owned 27 saab 96's V4 and 2 stroke) and went to a repair man in laural, md who's mechanic stated as you have stated that the "oil pumps don't usually go in those, but a .....?......, comes/falls off and blocks/clogs the oil pick up tube. My theory was that I wanted to hear the motor run before I had to pull the motor to unclog/replace the oil pump. A friend stated to me that he knows someone who has several of these motors, one of which is hopefully fresh, which I desire to have available, as back up, incase it is not just an oil pump problem. I aspire to pray about it, read the manual on the proceedures; pull the motor as you all have suggested and inspect the pick up tube in the pan and clean it out or swop out the pump and go from there. I am a 35 year old woman trying to keep the classics from the scrapper at the junk yard where I work. All the odd ducks seem to come my way and everyone there thinks these kind of cars are a waste of time. I am not of their opinion. I have a 66 mercedes in line now with the saab to follow . If I can keep "Sadie" running I maybe able to get to the saab this weekend. Any further suggestions, comments, or ideas?
