My current daily driver is a 96GL -79 (phenomenal traction on snow), and I use the freewheeling all the time. When the car is at a standstill, you engage it by pushing the freewheel handle all the way in towards the engine room. Normally I only use the clutch for reverse and 1st gear. When accelerating, instead of engaging the cluch to shift, let off the gas, wait a second to let the engine rpm fall down, shift to 2nd gear, then carefully raise the engine rpm again, until the freewheel hooks up, whereafter you can "step on it". Same procedure for going to 3rd and 4th. When downshifting it is not necessary to wait, as the lower gear will require higher rpm. It is still important though, to raise the engine rpm slowly, until the freewheel has hooked up.
Regards
Mikael H.
