I've had the same problem on my 75 99. When I first start driving the gauge will almost peg, and then drop down to about the middle. It is actually starting to run hotter (according to the gauge) than it used to. I just had a valve job, and a new head gasket put on about 9 months ago, and it did the same thing before. I also changed the thermostat. I still think the thermostat is late to open. Would it hurt the car to run sans thermostat? Any ideas? I'm going to change the temp sender, and the fan switch to see if that helps. Maybe have the system flushed?
Thanks!
Rich
