Based upon personal experience I can tell you that the OEM Visteon socket should be replaced when the bulb fails. If you only replace the bulb it will fail again in a very short period of time. If it fails again it's likely the bulb will have fused itself to the OEM Visteon socket. That's the best case scenario. Far more dire is what has happened to a couple of NG 9-5 owners: the OEM socket melts enough that it fuses itself to the tail lamp assembly. What this means is that one would have to replace the entire tail lamp assembly to gain functionality of the halogen bulb. And that ain't gonna happen because the supply of US tail lamp assemblies has been exhausted. In other markets the halogen bulb only functions as a turn signal. In the US it is also a brake light resulting in much more heat being generated leading to the failure of the socket in US and Canadian market NG 9-5's. If you're interested, a member of one of the NG 9-5 Facebook groups has concocted an LED replacement for the halogen bulb which a number of owners seem to think works quite well. That could be an option for you. Bottom line: don't do anything that might risk the integrity of the tail lamp assembly. If you choose to not replace the socket you are doing just that.
