Sorry Sean, I'm changing my vote - although I do think the cable can stretch and slip off a pulley and cause very similiar symptoms, the more I think about it, the more like a shift linkage problem it seems.
You can buy an upgraded shift linkage, that was put in 98s? and later. About $300, might be a nice upgrade if you need to replace the linkage anyway. There is actually a lot of info on the web for this, and I've thought about doing it myself. I've also heard you can improve the old one with a couple of washers?
And definitely find a good indy saab mechanic, or if not available, a saab dealer.
