I put the new linkage in at 115K miles. There was some free play in the old linkage but I think it wasn't too bad. It is very random with the problem, kind of like there are certain spots where it won't go into reverse. I can move the car a foot forward or backward and then it will usually drop into reverse just fine but doing this is a PITA.

The linkage alignment procedure calls for putting the lock pins in with the car in 4th gear with the engine off. Do you think it would matter if the alignment was done with the engine running? This would be a 2 man operation since someone would have to hold the clutch in while the adjustment was performed.
