Did they use a stethoscope when listening to the wheel bearing with car up in the air?
An early failure of wheel bearing can be really difficult to hear by the naked ear when the load is off the bearing (car in the air).
A cheap automotive stethoscope can usually pick up the failing wheel bearing when comparing the noise from left to right side.
It is also easy to use the stethoscope and listen to several spots of the outside of transmission housing to determine if the noise comes from the inside of tranny.
It might very well be that the dealer knows exactly what they are doing and it is in fact a bearing inside the transmission, but it would be a bummer if you still have the noise after the transmission is rebuilt.
I have seen many cases of mistaken source of noise and leaks from both Saabs and Volvos where in many cases the mechanic just didn't know the ins and outs of that particular model/year.
