I'm in the process of doing this (well, in the process of looking at it). My pump is squealing like a stuck pig! Anyway, a used one should be about $100-$125 (go to http://www.car-part.com to search). My haynes manual says that you have to partially remove the front bumper to get at the pump. I don't have the time, so I'm just going to disconnect it (remove relay C under the hood), remove the check valve at the manifold and plug the hole. Luckily on my car (1995 900S), this does not give me a CE light. On yours, you would get the CE light. Also, PM may be right, it may be one of the valves. Actually, looking at some other info, it looks pretty easy:
1. Lift up car and remove left spoiler and lower part of spoiler.
2. Remove air pump screws, disconnect connector and hose connections.
3. Lift out pump.
4. Remove the air filter's securing screw and remove the filter with it hose (Scott's note: this isn't the engine filter, it's a small canister connected to the intake of the pump).
The valves are pretty easy to get at. Shoot me an email address and I can send you some more info.
Scott
