I've had some problems getting my son's '96S into reverse. A linkage upgrade didn't completely fix the problems. Check the bushings in the linkage for free play. There is one white bushing under a black rubber cap that is the usual cause of the problems.
Getting into reverse was still sometimes a challenge after the upgrade. If you move the car a couple inches forward, you can hit a spot where it will then go into reverse.
