Old Myth - Thicker oil is better...... In 1984, when I took my new 900T in for the 1500 mile oil change, I noticed that the SAAB dealer use Castrol 20-50 oil. I asked about it because the owners manual said 10W-30 oil. The dealer replied that they always used the 20-50 and it was 'better'. Later, I called SAAB corporate to see what their answer was. SAAB corporate wanted the dealers name and sent a letter to the dealer stating that they must use the SAAB prescibed motor oil.
That was 1984 this is 2001, but the same old myth continues to circulate. One upon a time heavy weight motor oils offered better engine protection. But changes in motor oil technolgy have made the 10W-30 oils more than capable to meet the needs of current engine design. Continue to use your 10W-30 Mobil 1 and be assured that it is the right motor oil for your engine.
BTW, my old 1984 900T saw 13 years and 242,000 miles on Mobil 1 10W-30 (changed oil and filter every 5,000 miles) with the original turbocharger and original engine never needing to be opened for anything except for routine valve adjustment.
