First you need to understand the SAAB engine controls... I believe the owners manual has a quick tutorial on the basic SAAB engine controls. Basically, the SAAB engine control computers looks at a multitude of engine parameters and adjusts the engine controls accordingly. The parameters include engine temperature, O2 sensor data, combustion chamber ion levels, turbo boost levels, etc.
The SAAB engine control units do 'remember' the most recent parameter settings. Therefore when changing from Regular to Premium gasoline, or drastically changing your driving habits, the engine will need a few runs to adapt to the new parmaters.
The bottom line is the SAAB engine controls can adjust the engine to run on Regular 87 octane USA fuel, but probably at some loss of ulitmate engine performance. Using Premium 93 octane USA fuel insures that the SAAB engine control will give the maximum available engine performance.
