Wheter it was GM's doing or not, Saab Scania *technically* split in 1972 while still being owned by the same parent company. It wasn't until maybe 10 or so years ago that Saab actually sold Scania (or they went out of business, I don't remember). So, if it was GM's doing, we can at least admit they know how to properly badge a car!
I do agree with your platform point. The 9-3's platform is also used by the Chevy Cavalier I've heard. I ***HATE*** that car. But there's a clear difference between what Mercury does to a Taurus to make a Sable; and what Saab did to the Opel Vectra to get the 9-5. The X-type won't be a rebadged Contour. So the real question is: is the Contour using a platform worthy of the Jaguar name, OR is the Jaguar using a crappy Contour platform?
Just a side note, the new Taurus will be using a Volvo S60 platform. They're now styling the Jaguars like the current Taurus. Pretty soon, Ford, Mercury, Volvo and Jaguars will all be clones,, or let's hope not!!
