The current Chevy Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire platform is limited to those two models, which are becoming quite dated. Recall that when the Cavalier was introduced in the early 90's there was a deal with Toyota to distribute the cars in Japan with a Toyota badge and right-hand drive. All J-cars were built in a dedicated facility at Lordstown, OH at the time. Of course the quality of these vehicles was abysmmal and Toyota backed out (in 2000?) after woeful sales (in 1997 they sold about half the projected numbers).

The new Cavalier, yet to be launched, is based on a new Opel engineered platform code-named Delta, which will supposedly include new European and Asian cars as well. So the current 9-3, the current Chevy Cavalier, and the next generation Chevy Cavalier have nothing in common. Another platform called Epsilon will support the next-generation Saab 9-3, Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac Grand Am and Opel Vectra. GM so far plans to build Epsilon-based cars in Kansas City, Kan.; Trollhattan, Sweden; and Russelsheim, Germany. And just to confuse matters more it seems that GM has decided that an entirely new platform will be developed, by Saab engineers in Sweden, to support luxury brands such as the 9-5 and possible Cadillac and Fiat (Alfa Romeo) brands.

Cheers from the Motor City.
