Ron-you can consider this somewhat biased, since I've been using and selling AMSOIL for over 24 years.
Castrol synthetic was not a super oil when it was introduced--not nearly as good as AMSOIL or Mobil 1. A year or two ago, Castrol reformulated, and now uses a much less expensive base stock, which, according to the experts in the field, is not as good as the PAO which they previously used (particularly in cold).
The AMSOIL site showing the wear data is obviously done at higher than normal pressure and temperature, but does show a valid relationship for this one aspect of oil. Mobil 1 did better in the wear test before that was reformulated, but probably improved in some other areas.
Users have found through oil analysis that the wear with Mobil 1 is very low, and lower yet with AMSOIL.
Castrol Syntec won't ruin your engine, and is certainly better than npn-synthetic. I wouldn't try to extend the drain with it without using oil analysis.
