Smitty,
Thank you. I am glad that you got something out of it. If I remember correctly, I tested the HT Volvo C70 with an automatic. It had a very noticable turbo lag when I really stomped down on the accelorator. It did have a lot of power and I could see where it would be a good highway car. The LT version, though not as powerful, according to Consumer Reports, does not exhibit the turbo lag.
As far as road feel, when I returned to my Lexus after testing the Volvo. I noticed how much lighter it felt and how it seemed to take less effort to turn at low speeds. My Lexus just felt more responsive than the Volvo had. After driving the Saab, it felt even better than my Lexus. I must admit that the Saab grew on me slowly. I actually went on five different test drives with the Saab. Immediately after, I would then test drive a BMW convertible or the Volvo. I didn't consider the Audi because it is a two seater with not as much room for stuff as I like.
The Saab is shorter in length, wheelbase, and weighs less than the C70. The Volvo did appear to be a solid, well made vehicle. I know some folks have said that Volvo is having quality problems. However, it has a 4 year, 50,000 mile warrenty just like the Saab and their dealers are highly rated in Consumer Reports. Now, you can also buy an extended warranty from independent companies rather than the dealer. Granted warranty or not, it is no fun if your car is always in the shop.
From all that I have read, the audi is supposed to an excellent convertible because from the beginning Audi planned on having a convertible version. Audi was offering some good incentives and prices earlier in the season. I don't know how things are now. I know several people who own Boxsters and they are very expensive to maintain. One friend bought his used and purchased an extended warrenty which he says saved him about 3 grand in repairs. I never test drove the Viggen because I didn't want a stick shift nor did I feel that I needed all that power for the kind of driving I usually do, plus it has a harsher ride than the SE. I have no doubt that it is an awesome car.
Enjoy your search. If you do decide on the Saab be sure to post a question as to who are good dealers in your area.
Best wishes,
SteveH
