I use a cane. So, when I'm driving, I usually leave the cane against the passenger seat (there is hardly any room between the driver's seat and the door.)
On THREE occasions, when I've gone around a corner sharply, the cane has slid over and hit the key and shut the engine off! I've finally learned to wedge the cane between the passenger seat and the center console.
I have an elderly mother who sometimes is a bit unfocused. On a couple of occasions, she has grabbed my keys (while in the ignition) and asked, "are these your keys." Fortunately, she has not (yet) shut off the ignition.
Based on my experience, I think the location of the ignition in the center console is a definite safety hazard.
(Also, on the center console, the ignition takes up valuable room that could be used for storage or a cup holder.)
