We all agree that Saab makes a great car, but sometimes you have to question some of the design decisions. I believe the primary reason given in the 1970's for the relocation of the key from the steering column is to prevent the steering from locking in case of a mechanical failure in the ignition switch or when the ignition is switched off intentionally or unintentionally.

Having said that, I have never had the key turned off accidentally on any non-Saab over 30 years or in my last Saab 99 in the 1970's with a small key between the seats. In my 2001 9-3 with the big key head (with a lot of leverage) there have been two incidents: Last week my wife twisted to get something off the back seat, I guess put her knee on the console and shut the car off while I am driving in the left lane at 70. A few months ago, she pushed her bag down between the seats and shut things down while stationary.

THESE ARE NOT FALSE RUMOURS, THIS IS BAD DESIGN! CHILDREN, DOGS AND PASSENGERS HAVE ACCESS TO THE CENTER CONSOLE. THERE SHOULD NOT BE AN IGNITON SWITCH, WINDOW SWITCH OR DOOR LOCKS BETWEEN THE SEATS.

Let me repeat: We all agree that Saab makes a great car, but sometimes you have to question some of the design decisions. Don't get me started on the ballistic coffee ejector cup holder which you hit with your hand in the natural motion of shifting until you retrain your brain.
