Gary,
My suggestion is to read what consumer reports says and then go judge for yourself. Afterall, you will be driving and paying for the new car not consumer reports. I test drove the Saab 9-3SE convertible about 5 times before I bought it. I also test drove a BMW 325 convertible about 4 times. This is the car that consumer reports loves. Both my partner and I felt it had a terrible ride, was overpriced, and where not thrilled with the arrogant attitude of the BMW sales people. We liked the Saab better and the Saab dealers. I looked at the Volvo convertible. A nice car, but it did not have the agility nor the trunk room of the Saab.
I am the only one driving the car most of the time so the fact that when I pull the key out and the driver's side door unlocks, it is not a problem. Yes, the speakers could be of a better quality. I have already replaced the ones on the front dash. It cost me $130 to purchase and have The Good Guys install them for me. Perhaps, Santa will get me replacements for the doors.
So, if you have not done so already, create your list of what you would like on your new car from the engine to the stereo to the climate control system. Maybe, you want a lot of usable trunk room or maybe you want a car the is more luxury oriented. I had a '92 Lexus ES300 before I bought the SE. I am enjoying the agility and power of my SE. It is also a narrow car body wise which I find very useful living in Los Angeles where some roads can be narrow and parking is sometimes tight.
The bottom line is do you feel comfortable in the car? Don't let some of these car dealers just take you around the block. Tell them you want to take the car through it paces. Make an appointment. Play with all of the controls to see if they make sense to you. Are they easy to use? Do you have to take your eyes off of the road to use them? How does the car feel to you?
I would also research the car dealers in your area. Talk to your friends and find out who they like. When we live in the Washington DC area, there was a wonderful publication called Checkbook magazine. They would get reviews from actual customers regarding auto dealers. Maybe you have something like that in your area. You also have the option of using Autobytel.com and several other online auto shopping services to help you get the best price. You still have to determine what vehicle best suits you and your needs.
Good Luck.
