From comments I've seen over the months, many folks believe the 9-3 is an improvement over the NG900 series, even though hey are similar in many ways.
You haven't mentioned whether you've had the 9-3 from the Saturn dealer checked over by an independent mechanic, or the nearest (the term is used loosely, from what you've said the distance is) SAAB dealer. I think many here would urge you to have the vehicle fully checked out by an independent inspector. And the same should go for the used vehicles at the Saab dealership. Once you've got an unbiased report as to the condition of the vehicle, you'll be in a much better position to decide on the decision. If you can get satisfied as to the car at the Saturn dealer, I'd do the deal and immediately leave it with the SAAB dealership to have whatever warranty work that is covered done, before reaching 50K miles. I would not drive it on your 1,000+ mile business trip before having it gone over and warranty work is done.
If you cannot get satisfied, take your trip, then come back, see whether the Saturn dealer still has the car and whether you still like it - then do al of the above. Personally, if I could do it over again, I'd get the SE model (we have the 9-3 base convertible and I regret not getting the ACC of the SE). I think a lot of these cars were sold off the lots with manufacturer-subsidized leasing, and I suspect there will be a lot of used 1999 9-3's coming into the markey over the next 12 months. If you're patient, and in an area where these may be coming available, you may be able to do well if you're patient.
Just some thoughts - good luck!
