I've owned many cars over the years, including Hondas and Nissans, and I rate the reliability of my Saab as good or better. My Nissan never broke. We just outgrew it. Then there is my 2000 Saab 9-3. Purchased new, it now has 50,000 trouble free miles. My Hondas are good cars, but I experienced a few problems, mostly due to age and mileage. The particular Saab problem mentioning the blue smoke makes me think of something I noticed when I owned a 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Many Turbo Coupe owners failed to do basic things like change the oil or even use a high quality motor oil. It is also important to let a turbo warm up and in the older turbos to cool down. Many Turbo Coupe owners replaced their turbos at 43,000 to 65,000 miles. I never had to because I took care of it. I sold that car 13 years later with 141,000 miles and it still ran strong. Today, there is no excuse. The synthetic oils eliminate most of the hazard in coking the turbo, cooling is better, and the bearings are greatly improved. Saab has a marvelous turbo set up. Why the smoking? Probably because some owner did not follow Saab's recommendation and run a good synthetic motor oil. There is a lot of knowledge on this site, but I am appalled at how many questions are asked by owners who obviously never read the owner's manual. And many on this site buy used Saabs. That is good in terms of depreciation, but occasionally someone ends up with a car that was abused by a previous owner. They're great cars built for the long haul!
