GM is a global company that builds and sells cars worldwide. GM has cars all over the place here in Germany. Opel is a big part of GM, and they sell cars of all sizes here, the same as Mercedes and BMW. Plus vans and trucks. Most Europeans move to the larger sedans when they can afford it, although they do value efficiency. That is one reason diesels make up 40% of the car market here. ONe thing I have found interesting is the number of Chevrolets (Camaro, Corvette, Suburban) and Cadillacs (Seville STS) that are sold here to Europeans. Ever seen a Chevrolet Trans Sport? It's here and similar to the US model. And they are built in the US (I checked the VINs). Opel also sells a version of the Trans Sport as the Safira. As to small cars, the Ford Focus is truly world class, both the European and US versions. Let's look at the rest of the world. GM sells a lot of cars in Australia where they are manufactured as Holden. Very different than in the US, but still a GM. However, that may change as GM is looking to source some of its US products from Australia. Mitsubishi does that well with its Diamante. GM also owns large parts of Suzuki and Isuzu, where there is a lot of cross pollination in product lines. Every successful manufacturer today builds cars out of components manufactured by subsidiaries located around the globes. VW, Toyota, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, BMW, etc. Car manufacturers have to be global to compete and succeed. And you will find a mix of nationalities in the corporate leadership. Some of the most successful BMW, Audi and VW products in the last 10 years had American designers! After living in the US, Asia and now Europe, I no longer look at a car as a national entity. It is the corporate culture that makes the difference rather than regional or national origin. Successful cars need quality people in styling, engineering and manufacturing whether it is built in Sweden, the US, Japan, Germany and/or Mexico.
