Not everyone uses small engines with turbochargers because they want a linear power curve. They want the torque to be consistent with revs and horsepower. They want the power as soon as they put their foot down, not a moment later. They want their car to act like it has a NA V8 or V12 in it.
A supercharger keeps things more linear than a turbo, and superchargers sound damn cool. Really, we like our turbo sounds, but a nice supercharged Jag being driven hard sounds absolutely lusty. In "driving forces" back in the early days of long races, they could hear the mercedes coming before they could see it due to the sound of the supercharger. They must have had quite a different sound.

According to Corky Bells book, nobody really uses superchargers to win races now, but there are many many racing applications for turbocharged cars.

Also, most every diesel engine that it not small is turbocharged. Trucks, generators, boats, industrial uses. Torque is more important than horsepower for many of these uses.

Personally, I like the wild boost curve in my 88 900T with its various performance upgrades. I can control the throttle and revs and have just the effect I want on the boost needle and tires. It's fun. The viggen is fun too, at the same time that it is way more powerful than my 88 it's tamed and more natural "normal" on the throttle.
