I have hit some of the "common" problems with my 1999 9-3 automatic. I have 70,000 kms ( 43,500 miles) on the car.
- Replaced heater control unit on first sign of problem. Replaced/lubricated heat intensity conector post-replacement
- Replaced a middle muffler due to mostly city driving then going to country and blowing it out.
- new set of front brake pads and rotor cutting at 35,000 kms $$$ due to mostly city driving and in a hilly neighborhood (unwarranteed)
- I replace spark plugs every 10,000 kms. this is required to keep boost at proper levels. (unwaranteed)
- replaced chrome grille due to v small flaw.
- replaced plastic mud deflector afore the engine (broke again on low curb)
- replaced antenna due to unhitched inner plastic tow rope
- am replacing the wiper motor to see if I can get more than a mere dribble faster to the rear window.
- 4 light bulbs - 1 for headlight - 1 for license plate - 1 for vanity mirror - 1 for tail-light (dealer discretion parts)
All told, the car has been in the shop about 1.5 days in the past two years. I would own this car without an extended warranty. All this said though, I love the car and find it a hoot to drive!! It is clearly a Love relationship. I will buy when the lease is up and possibly get an Aero wagon or 9X too if the enterpreneurial ship comes in.
In a recent 2 year sum-up of owner experiences with all UK marques in the UK auto club, the 9-3 finished tied with two Nissans and (I think) a Mits for top spot - zero (0) faults found. Having said that, the UK has a more consistent prep program for the dealers, or so I am led to believe.
The 9-5 finished a respectable 3rd.
