Bill,
Very sorry to hear about your bad luck. That is one of the worst stories I've heard in a long time. I catch all kinds of abuse on that board because I gripe about my 9-3, which breaks all the time. But I've never had a problem like that.
To give you a little perspective on how to proceed, egregious cases like this are usually handled "diplomatically" by the manufacturer. A friend recently had the motor go out on a 1998 Porsche Boxter. The car was dealer-maintained, but just out of its warranty period. The dealer called Porsche North America, who sent a rep out to examine the car. No abuse was detected, so Porsche NA paid for a new motor ($12,000).
Most manufacturers, most of the time, will pay for most or all of a catastrophic failure like this, if the car has been properly maintained. Your dealer should have contacted Saab on your behalf. Regardless, you should contact them and politely but firmly explain that you cannot accept a $30,000+ car blowing up after 54,000 miles. Explain that you understand that the car is out of warranty, but obviously this wasn't a natural failure but an extraordinary manufacturing defect that the manufacturer should take care of out of good will.
They will probably have you contact Saab's legal department. I haven't dealt with them, but I have the impression from other posts that Saab is not a very friendly operation. Hopefully I'm wrong. But you should push this to the limit, including letters from your attorney if they refuse to be reasonable.
Just keep in mind -- just because the car is out of warranty (and barely) does NOT mean that they can or should just walk away. Legally, maybe they can. But this would be a drastic departure from how manufacturers normally handle cases like this. I'll bet that if you're persistent enough they will pay for most or all of this. And in fact there may be legal precedent for redress even outside a warranty, in cases of catastrophic mechanical failure.
Good luck.
