If the car has over 16,000 miles, wear items and squeaks and rattles are no longer covered by the warranty. Granted, the brake system inspection, and top-off should have been covered, but the rattle wouldn't have been (technically). I would say that the service advisor should have informed you of the charge prior to fixing (as is customary by a service dept.), and asked for your approval.

If I were in your shoes, I would dispute the charge on the brakes. Although, I would pay the charge on the rattle, and remember to inform the service advisor that calling for authorization prior to completing the job is always necessary (in your case). Make him remember this incident, and it will never happen again. In the future, the both of you will have a clear picture of what to expect when the car is in for service. If you are firm, yet tactful and calm he will correct this problem over time. Who knows, you'll probably receive the best service you've ever had, because he'll go out of his way to keep you happy.

The one thing that I have learned is acting like a brat solves nothing. It might get you some free goodies now, but it will make your life more difficult in the future. If the service advisor sees you coming, he'll go into "cover my a$$" mode, and you'll receive just enough service to keep you from complaining. If, on the other hand, you nicely let him know of his mistake, and tell him that you'll let it slide as long as it doesn't happen again, he'll respect your leeway and return the favor graciously.

This is my two cents, anyway.

Cheers,
Brian.
