Just got another idea on how you can get a spare key that you can take surfing. Get an all-metal dup key made at anyplace that will cut you a 2-sided, Saab-type key. I think that these things are more common now.

Use that key for surfing (secure it well in your trunks!) and keep the "real key" (with bottons and transponder) inside your car. The dup car won't start your car, but it will open your doors and trunk.
