Had heard that only the new-style key with buttons could be used with a 2002 9-3. They're nice, but expensive ($150-200 range each) I am told.

I like to have a spare key around for obvious reasons. Had my dealer give me a spare with my new 9-3. He ordered the plain key (without control buttons) for a 1999 9-3. When it came in it would open the door/truck but not start the car. The technician took my 2 original keys and my new 'spare' and did his magic.

The new key will now manually open the trunk, driver's door, and start the car. No problems. The non-buttoned key and transponder cost $47 at the parts department. Dealer programming is required, but may be negotiable with other service.
