Thanks for all the responses, even the negative ones. I ended up re-test driving the 9-3 and the 9-5 a couple days later. The 9-5 was nice, but didn't fit my needs. However the 9-3 tested better the second time, possibly because I had just tested a Subaru Outback an hour before (capable at $24k, but mediocre power, noisier, and non-plush), and I had mentally blocked my 240SX expectations. My wife loved it too (funny cuz she was dead set on the Outback for weeks and even after driving it, then after the 9-3 she was "Outback? What Outback?") I wasn't sold yet, till I tested the Passat (see my posts on 6/14/02).

So in the end it was the layout (roomy hatchback), the many features, power, and the price that won me over. (Saab safety helped, but the Passat scored much better in many crash tests, so I question Saab's hype vs. reality here.) In compromise I'll have to give up the tight ride and the CD/MP3 I just spent hours researching/installing in my car. (Hopefully they'll come out with an MP3-capable 6-disc changer someday.) My bones are getting older now, so maybe I'll appreciate the softer ride. I'll definitely appreciate the power and braking. And the later addition of those cup holders (http://www.drinkholders.com/auto/index.htm) will seal the deal.

I found a dealer selling at invoice (before incentives) and in the colors I wanted. My first dealer choice (closer) wouldn't budge beyond $1000 over invoice (before incentives), even for less popular colors in his stale stock. I'm not sure why the big difference... they're only about 40 miles apart, north and south of Boston.

And I went for the automatic... the beautiful power of the 5-speed just doesn't make up for the traffic conditions here which take a toll on my left knee after a few hours stuck in weekend roadtrip traffic. Besides, my wife is a little rough on a stick and she's drooling to get her hands on it next week.
