SKB,
There are two threads lower on this page about very similar subjects. One is titled "What's a typical parts markup" and the other is titled "Just Bought a 1999 9-3 and I have a few questions". You may get some good info from those discussions.
Your stock CD player is set up to control the CD changer sold by the dealer. Buttons numbered 1-6 take you directly to CDs 1-6 and the FF and RW buttons on your CD head unit and on your steering wheel control everything. It works seamlessly and the car _should_ be prewired for the CD changer so that it can be plugged in where it goes, which is in the trunk on the left driver's side in the hatch area. It really takes up little room, but needs ot be done at the dealership because there is an initiation process (search this board also for the word 'married') that syncs it up.
You could buy an aftermarket changer, but that generally means you will need to use an RF modulator and have a separate, but relatively small, interface to control it. You lose the built-in functionality you get with the stock changer. I have the stock changer and am very happy with it. I did have it jam once and had to perform surgery on it, but it has never skipped. Ever. Good luck- JerryC
