This is interestng. If I switch from 94 to 87, I'll get worse gas mileage with the 87 for the first tank. When the ECU adjusts, I then get better mileage with 87 on the next tank and it stays that way.
When I finally went back to 93 the car felt sluggish until the ECU adjusted and then became much more fun plus the mileage dropped a few mpg.
I was on your side (ie; when I would first switch to 87 I'd get worse mileage) but after using it for a few tanks, it corrected itself. I felt myself eating humble pie because TG, or whoever was stating that lower octane gives better mileage was correct.
Think of it this way; A gasoline that is rated at a higher octane burns more slowly which means that it packs less oomph unless the ECU can adjust and increase the timing to compensate (which Saabs do of course). When it does this and you drive fast (that's probably the key here) then your mileage will drop with higher octane gasoline in the Saab.
Perhaps you're on to something here. << Theory Alert >>
I'm only on the freeway a short time each day and have some nice twisty back roads where I'm heavy on the gas. Perhaps in those situations where the car is making more power often, you get get worse mileage. When I had 87 in there for awhile, the fun was gone so romping on the gas became less addictive.
I always run 93 now. Hey, 2mpg less isn't much to give up for the increased fun factor. :)
