Attended the Flight Academy on the weekend and got to see the new 9-3. I was interested to learn that the manual gear shift is linked by a cable linkage - although you wouldn't realize this from the feel of it - time will tell if it stays that way in service.

Also, the turbo is now mounted between the firewall and the rear of the transverse engine - a GM standard which means a short run to the cat. They initially designed an air-scoop that ran over the top of the engine to cool it, but found that it was unnecessary in service. The new all-alloy engine is 35lbs lighter.

IMHO I felt that the dash looks very busy, with a plethora of buttons and tacky looking air vents, very similar to the Vectra in the UK. Nn performance versions worthy of the Viggen name (see below) will be produced until Saab see sales volume - they feel that the next high performance 9-3 is probably a couple of years or so down the road and also no decision has yet been made if they will ever use the Viggen name again.
