i am aware of the force limitations on the seat, but i greatly appreciate you pointing it out. actually the britax is rear facing compatible to 30 lbs and they are the only child seat company to have their own crash testing sleds. they do side impact tests as well as front, rear and offset. and you're right about the safety money issue: britax uses energy absorbing materials around the head and sides like a bike helmet. a lot of the seats that i originally looked at were plastic buckets with a foam cover. it would be like wearing a helmet three sizes to large. scary that they can get away with that.
as to the post mounted to the floor, you might be interested to look at volvo's child seats. they are only available in europe and have said that they are binging them here for the past two years. they have posts and use latch so that the rear facing seat can be in the back seat rear facing with a heavier child and still absorb the impacts. do a google search and check them out. I tried to have one shipped here but none of the european dealers would do it.
