The 17" rims might not stand up to your roads, they will get bent. If you have snow tires, you have pot holes. The wheels will cost a lot more, road 'feel' might get out of your comfort zone, and the tires for the 17" rims will cost a lot more money.
So I guess that I have a preference for 16" rims :)
I you used good tires on 16" rims, you would have a huge improvement.
Get a tire and wheel package from tirerack and the mounting and balancing is free. And the shipping of 4 pieces is cheaper than 8. They will likely provide new wheel bolts for free. Ask. And no sales tax unless you live in the same state as one of their outlets. But if you are that close, you can drive there and skip the shipping. You can't get out of both!
You can get 16x6.5" rims, for $105 each. Sport Edition Fox II*. Six spoke and look very good. Add the Potenza S-03's for $127 each and you will have a real good package. The 6.5" rim is nominal for this 205/50-16 tire. Yes you can get wider rims, but I don't see the benefit other than increasing the chances for curb rash.
You can spend more on the rims and less on the tires and get less traction etc. I don't know if you can find a better performance tire that the S-03. With that you also get the probably the best wet traction in the industry. Performance tires are not just for street racers and ego trips, they are a great choice for safety on any vehicle.
*there might be another wheel at that price too.
