I am new to Saabs so I don't have a good idea of what feels normal. I bought a 99 base auto about two weeks ago at Carmax. It only has 26k miles on it, but had a lot of shuffle in the brakes. Before I would buy it I made them fix the problem. They milled down the rotors and put new pads on all the way around.
The shuffle is completely gone, but I am surprised at how far I have to press the pedal down to get to a stop. I have noticed that when I am stopped in traffic, I usually have the pedal all the way to the floor. If I give it a jab with my toe it will not go any further down. I can let it up just a little and remain stopped, but If I let it up any real distance the car starts groaning/creeping forward. It gets a bit tiring after a while to have to keep my leg fully extended on the pedal in traffic. I mean, hey thats why I settled for an auto in the first place--easy in traffic.
If I get on the brakes under speed they will really stop the car in a hurry, but I have never had a car that I routinely end up holding the brake pedal to the floor in before. I also get a good deal of squeaking--but I attribute that to the newness of the pads. They squeak most noticeably when I am cutting the wheel hard and braking (swinging into a parking space).
I am taking it back in a few days to have a wheel replaced (I found out one was bent) and want to ask them to look at the brakes again--but I want to go in with some knowledge not just complaints. I am pretty sure that since they started the repairs as a condition to purchase I have some negotiating room here if I know what to ask for.
So what's normal for a 99 9-3? Should the pedal really be fully (and I do mean fully) depressed in routine stop and go driving?
Thanks!
