What are the size/profile of the tires? How many miles on 'em versus their claimed mileage rating? When you say they "feel" cupped, do you mean when you drive or when you run your hand over the tread? Can you actually see any adverse wear patterns? On more than one tire? Oh, & what are the symptoms when driving?
I don't know about the '02 manual, but the manual I've got says the listed pressures are "LOWEST RECOMMENDED." For my 205/50-16 Michelin Pilots, that means I run 'em around 44-48psi (they're max rated at 51psi). And I STILL have to fight with accelerated shoulder wear. For my 195/60-15 BFGs (sorry Jason, I nixed my mumbers up last time), I run 'em around 42-44psi (they're max rated at 44psi). On those I get almost perfectly even wear.
Oh yeah, I only rotate 'em when I swap summers for winters, & I stay L-L & R-R. I monitor their wear with a tread depth gauge, & have never seen more than 1/32" difference between F/R. (Interestingly, the right side wears faster than the left side. I've got theories about this, but won't go into 'em now.)
If it's steering wheel shake/vibration, you could've knocked off a balance weight (you ARE Mr. Extreme, after all). Or, tire pressure may be unequal between L/R sides; check 'em cold (in the morning, before driving) with a decent hand gauge & use a bike pump to match the pressures. Other possibilities? Dunno. Maybe one slightly bent rim?
If you want to even out the wear, then x-rotating them is the best way to go. For FWD cars, you move the front wheels straight back, then cross the back wheels to the front, just like your shop recommended.
I thought all Pirelli's came with a treadlife guarantee (NOT warranty), meaning they WILL pro-rate them if you get less than x-miles out of 'em? That's the way my tire shop handled it when I bought some P400s for my '90. They didn't even blink, & BANG! I've got 4 new tires on the car for $100.
Good luck, & let us know what develops.
