I am curious why you would use just a 1/4" drive to try and loosen the drain plug. I normally us the 1/2" just so I can get the damn thing loose because I need the extra leverage of the long ratchet.
Anyway, I have the Fram sure drain, I don't remember the size but 14 x 1.5 sounds right. I installed it during the last oil change so I haven't had a chance to really use it but I can say it doesn't leak between changes and looks to be adequate quality.
The normal drain plug sold at the auto store should be adequate provided the threads are correct. I still have my old one and it isn't much more than a bolt with an integral washer built into the head.
