I bought a new 2002 1.8T Jetta and was very disappointed with the poor quality build, terrible suspension, rattles and a few engine check lights that were eventually fixed under warrantee. After putting in a rear sway, konis and sport springs I still hated the thing. My daughter likes VWs and she said she'd take it off my hands if I wanted to get something else (she got a good price!). I had been thinking of SAABs for about a year, but hadn't seriously looked. One night I went on the web and found this site on a search. Also read Edmonds reviews etc. Found a 99 9-3 here in the classifieds. Was amazed at the low prices. Glad I didn't take that kind of depreciation. Visited the owner about 60 miles from here. Test drove. Nice condition, pampered, green, beige leather, 38,000 mi. Bought it two days later. The car was previously owned by a lady who knew nothing about cars except take it to the dealer for all service. She was frustrated not by the service but by the number of times she had to have a loaner. Finally bought a Volvo. The last straw was the engine head gasket blowing at 36,000 mi. She had the complete maint. history. After I got it I had the heater box replaced and rear door latches replaced under remaining warrantee. The SAAB dealers were gracious (two different places). Have soldered the headlight relay board myself, and put new Koni shocks all around. Compared to a VW, there is no comparison. The SAAB is a CAR. However, I'm not sure I would want one if I didn't like to work on cars. If I just wanted to drive without too many hastles, I think I'd go Honda or Toyota, but no fun. If you get a SAAB you're going to have to tinker some yourself IMO, otherwise it will cost you a lot at the dealer. Good luck.
