I think the newer Saabs,(99 on), seem to be about the most reliable for the first 50k miles or so of any European Marque. I have owned three 9-5s and three 9-3s in that time for the four members of my family. The real problem with Saabs are the dealerships. Many still don't have competent mechanics to work on these cars. It has been my experience that when something goes wrong it is usually very minor but that occasionally due to the lack of competent mechanics even very minor problems can be major to you if your dealer or shop can't solve the problem. But Saab is moving up fast and dealer mechanical quality is quickly improving. If you get one make sure you have a good dealer!
If you choose Saab you will definitely be moving up in the overall quality of car you have, especially in the area of safety. Saab has a long history of doing exceptionally well in real world crash situations. Deaths in Saabs and serious injuries in Saabs are rare. No car company has Saab's mindset when it comes to safety. Check out IIHS, crashtest.com, Folksam (Sweeden) Insurance and carsafety.org if you care. Saab has done very well in recent crash testing but even a few years ago when their crash testing wasn't stellar, their real world safety stats (the real important thing anyway) still were. That's because Saab runs about 45 safety tests on their cars not just a few. Saab cars have always done very well in rollovers, side impacts, rear impacts, animal impacts, pole impacts, and fire prevention, as well as frontal collisions, all of which encompass total safety, not just one dimensional safety.
Good luck with your choice but I thought you might want to know something about a car you may be choosing, and which Saab, unlike (inferior) Volvo, refuses to brag about.
