Maybe if you don't drive you car, then you don't need soap. Then again, you don't need water, just a duster.
I don't mean to be harsh, but what about dirt, bugs, bird droppings, rain spots? If you drive often on Interstates, road grime from trucks. If you drive in the salt-belt, you have salt. Most of the things listed are not easily soluble in water unless you soak for hours, or scrub (scratches!).
If you use a mild car wash soap (mild meaning chemically harshness, not mild as in not very good at cleaning) and use a little bit to prevent too much suds, it won't take much to rinse it away. I generally use only 2 buckets worth of water for a car wash.
