Hey Ed,
Mine was made 11/98 & the tranny acts the same. I never notice the A/C being excessively loud unless I'm standing outside the car, & then only when it's in fromt of our house (so it may be due to the acoustics of our cul-de-sac, as we've noticed a lot of things are noisier here than other places). Inside, it's quieter than other cars I've owned from the same period (a '95 Corolla wagon & a '97 Cavalier). Come to think of it, I think the Cavalier's tranny had similar cold characteristics. It was the 2.2L 4cyl.

Have you tested your valve to see if it's air-tight? Both my Bosch diaphragm valve & Forge piston valve are air-tight (on vacuum test) & I can't hear anything from either of'em. How many miles are on it? It might be time for a replacement.
