I would not be so certain about the handling without a comparative drive. I did several test drives of both the Mazda6s and 9-3 before buying the Mazda. From a handling and steering feel point of view they are completely comparable. You might prefer one or the other but it is very close. I only paid $21.5K for the Mazda with 6 cyl, auto transmission, 6 cd changer and side curtains, which are options on the Mazda vs standard on the 9-3.
