Bad strut, bad housing or bad mechanic?

Recently had a new suspension installed and the mechanic said I should replace my torn ball joints boots soon as possible.
I drove the car for a few weeks with the new suspension, waiting for the ball joint boots to arrive. The car drove fine with no noticeable noises or problems.
This past weekend my mechanic put the boots on and I now hear a rattle from the right front suspension. When I went to get an alignment (at another shop), the technician said he couldn't align the car because of movement in the right front strut (rod to the housing connection). The technician guessed the strut or strut housing was bad.
I called my mechanic and he said it wasn't from anything he did the day before. I doubt this because the car was fine after the new suspension was installed, but had the problem after he put on the ball joint boots.
Does anyone know what the problem might be: bad strut, bad housing or bad mechanic?
