Our son has a Brittany Spaniel, lighter than 70 pounds, and uses the dog/seatbelt harness on her every time she rides in the car. In years past (before harnesses were around) when we carried a dog, the dogs were trained to lie in the front passenger's footwell. That way in the event of a crash the dog would slide up against the passenger's footwell and not fly over the back of the front seat (if she/he were in the back seat). Oh how I hate seeing dogs with their heads out the car/truck window just waiting to be blinded by a passing bug - ask a motorcyclist why he wears a face shield or goggles and then you won't let your pet hang his head out!
Good luck, traing the dog to accept the harness is a pain but worth it,
