Our pediatrician said 20 pounds and one year was the time to change to forward facing. He explained the one year is so the neck muscles develop sufficiently. NHTSA says Over 1 year and 20 lbs.-40 lbs should be in forward facing.
I had a '00 9-3 SE as well, and was always impressed with how securely I could fasten the child seats (I have a 2 and 5 year old). When I got my 9-3 SS, I got some seat protectors from Right Start that go under the seat and up the back a bit. I take them out to vacuum and treat the leather every so often, and so far, no creases, cracks, or damage.
Anyway, keep the kiddos safe, enjoy the Saab, and try to put things right with hubby. Cheers, Erik
