And why?
There is a lot of wear of iron and steel in an engine. In a well designed and maintained engine, the wear particle will be very small, too small for the full flow filter to remove. A really strong magnet can pull much of that out of the oil. This serves two purposes. One is to remove these hard iron and steel paricles which can be of the same size of the oil films in bearings and cam lobe oil films. These hard particles can damage soft bearings and scuff cam lobes. The other purpose is to provide a visual idication of whats in the engine. If you see little chunks of chain roller or sprocket teeth, you might want to do an overhaul before the pistons eat valves.
Fine metal particles are also act as oxidation catalysits and this mechanism is probably a key part of oil sludging failures.
Wear metals can also be reduced with bypass filters. But these are difficult to install as there is very little space under the hood for added things. Magnets can also be installed on the outside of oil filers to work through the can or in other locations.
One should never 'play' with a strong magenet oil plug as the engergy is high enough that the impact will damage the magenet. Deliberate care is required! One reason why I don't let the dealer change my oil!
