Here's my idea for a dash mod i'm gonna try building...

The idea is, when i'm parked at home, the PC will connect to the wireless network I have set up and automatically sync mp3s and movies to the external harddrive. When I pull into the parking lot at work, it will connect to the corporate wireless network, and show me appointments in my outlook calendar. While i'm driving, the GPS (in part with nav. software) will function as my navigation system.

The core of it is just a 400 mhz pocket pc with wireless network, GPS, and a 10 gig external harddrive. I want to try and mount the screen alone into the dash, most likely where the ashtray currently is. The rest of the electronic junk will be hidden behind the dash.

It will be connected to both the MOST network in the car, as well as its Tech II terminal. This gives me the ability to use the cars existing network to transfer audio signals to the speakers, as well as change all the programmable features in the car myself.

Parts are going to run about 500 dollars (about 250 for the pocket PC, 100 for the wifi card and gps, and 150 or so for the fiber optic couples.) I forsee two big chunks of software that i'll need to write - an audio driver that converts analog audio signals to MOST-compatible optics, and another which is the program to interface with the TechII system. Both will be written in managed code, leveraging the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework.

What do you guys think? I'll try and post pics as progress is made. The link below is the pocket pc I ordered.
