I work with airplane glass we define two forms of chips, spall chips where a flake of glass has been knocked or pulled off and "V" chips which are "V" shaped pits in the glass with cracks at the bottom of the pits. For this discussion, we can disregard spall chips. So my guess about what Drew is talking about is if you have a rounded pit in the glass without a crack at the bottom, don't worry about it. I have a number of small pits in my front window and they are doing nothing. However if you have a chip, which is "V" shaped pit with a crack associated with it, get it repair ASAP before the cracks grow and you need a new window.
